Nightjar (129 City Rd, Shoreditch, London EC1V 1JB)
If you are looking for superbly crafted, visually exciting cocktails then Nightjar needs to be on your list. This Shoreditch gem has a comfortable and calm atmosphere, the menu is broad, and the décor is wonderfully old-school glamour. Book in advance as the subterranean venue is small and table service only.
Downstairs at Swift (12 Old Compton St, Soho, London W1D 4TQ)
Nestled below Swift in the heart of Soho, this classic look Speakeasy is definitely worth a visit. The booths are comfy, the low lighting is moody, and the cocktails are delicious. The seating area is compact, so it is definitely worth booking but this is a chic speakeasy, and the standard of the drinks lives up to the image.
The Discount Suit Company (29A Wentworth St, Spitalfields, London E1 7TB)
By day, you would be unaware that the former tailor’s basement stockroom is a vibrant speakeasy serving an excellent range of cocktails. By night, it is quite obvious due to extremely visible SIA badge on the man working the door. This is a popular and busy establishment, there is seating and standing space available. The atmosphere is fun, and the staff are really friendly. Definitely check this out.
Evans & Peel Detective Agency (310c Earls Ct Rd, Earl's Court, London SW5 9BA)
The USP for Evans & Peel is the entrance. Descending the stairs to the 1920s-style Private Investigator’s office, you are light-heartedly quizzed about your reason for wanting to enter. After persuading the PI that you are legitimate in your reasons, you are permitted to enter the bar. Behind this banter is a nicely sized bar with a good cocktail menu. It has not been too busy when I have visited but the atmosphere was suitably relaxed.
Purl London (50-54 Blandford St, Marylebone, London W1U 7HX)
This speakeasy is a beautifully designed warren, with cubbyholes and nooks at every turn. The décor is stylish, and the seating arrangements allow for a very personal feel to your visit. The cocktail menu is extensive and inventive – if you want to drink an espresso-based cocktail out of a tiny porcelain toilet, this is the place for you. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable which makes for a really comfortable environment. Book in advance as this is a popular choice.
